I hear this ALL the time on forums, chat pages and at expos. Its frustrating, but kind of understandable. On the day we celebrants DO turn up, conduct a 20/30 minute ceremony, pack up and go! THIS is what people see, this is the visual, public face of being a Celebrant. Not the behind the scenes work that I do late into the night, often into the small hours of the mornings. Or the meticulous packing and preparation that goes into my pre-wedding day routine.I didn’t get into it with the window cleaner! I like him, and hes a hard working sole-trader…. But I’d just paid him $80 for a 45 min job to clean my windows…..
*Booking meeting – 1 to 2 hours.
*Ceremony writing – A couple of hours initially, plus one or two edits at an hour or two-ish each.
*Rehearsal – 1 hour, plus travel time.
*Document preparation for ceremony, printing of custom written ceremony, including a bespoke ceremony book – 1 to 2 hours.
*Unlimited meetings, phone-calls, Facebook chats, SMS and e-mails as needed – unlimited hours, every couple is different!
*Wedding day – I allow 2 hours plus travel time.
*Documentation for BDM – 1 hour including a trip to the post office. So anything from 15 hours to 18 hours on average depending on how long I travel, how complicated the ceremony is and how much time I spend with the couple…. and often its alot lot more!
That’s not taking into account the ‘consumables’ costs…. car, office supplies, legal documents, Celebrant registration and training, insurance and association memberships.
And I still love what I do!!!!
And by the way…….
At $500 @ wedding, that’s $33 @ hour for 15 hours work!
Pretty good value for money in my opinion!!!!!!!!!!!!!
